Colibrex achieves milestone with the delivery of 11 NavAidDrones to SENEAM in Mexico, pioneering ILS and VOR measurements post-Hurricane Otis in Acapulco

Rheinmuenster/Mexico City, 25.01.2024 – Colibrex, via the LS telcom AG subsidiary LS telcom Ltd. Canada, and Telnorm Air as local service partner in Mexico, has successfully completed the project, won last year, for the delivery of measurement drones to SENEAM, the Mexican Air Navigation Service Provider.

With 11 NavAidDrone systems, this project is unique in its scope and marks a new era in the deployment of drone-based measurement approaches in the aviation world. The NavAidDrone is a fully integrated measurement drone for specialized field measurements required for inspection and regular maintenance of Instrument Landing Systems (ILS) and VHF Omnidirectional Radio Range (VOR/DVOR). It has been jointly developed by Colibrex, a subsidiary of LS telcom, and FCS Flight Calibration Services.

The Aeronautical Authority in Mexico (AFAC) and SENEAM are working to implement the regulations and necessary processes to integrate new technologies into the aviation sector. SENEAM’s CEO Javier Alonso Vega Dour strongly supports technological advancements and enhanced operational safety in the aviation industry. He is convinced of the multiple benefits of drone-based NavAids inspection and stated as an example of application “After Hurricane Otis inflicted catastrophic damage in Acapulco, we deployed the NavAidDrone to check the ILS and VOR systems at Aeropuerto Internacional General Juan N. Álvarez (IATA: ACA, ICAO: MMAA).” He added "Colibrex, LS telcom, and Telnorm Air responded swiftly to assist our staff in this challenging disaster recovery mission!"

Ricardo Orozco Delgado, Technical Director of SENEAM, further noted "Our primary goal is to enhance the inspection and maintenance of ILS & VOR systems at all Mexican airports. For instance, we now have the capability to detect variations in ILS signals, which were previously unmeasurable with conventional methods."

“For this key project with several drones to be dispatched and operated within the country, it was obvious that Colibrex, LS telcom and Telnorm Air are the first choice as a team when it comes to reliability, support, and experience for such a high-level innovative technology.” Ricardo Aguilar, Director of Aeronautics at Telnorm Air, adds, and he concludes "We were able to present SENEAM with the most advanced and field-proven solution in the market. Our concept, distinct from commercial drone platforms, features a high level of system integration and emphasizes the best focus on local services."

The Managing Director of Colibrex, Luc Haeberlé, states “SENEAM's project is a game changer, and we are convinced that this choice will inspire many other ANSPs worldwide to adopt our cutting-edge technology with the additional goal of reducing flight inspection efforts and CO2 impact.

For us, it represents the dedication of several years of effort and investment in the development of a solution that offers multiple advantages, both in terms of measurement quality and remarkable operational efficiency.”

With the signed contract, Colibrex, together with its technology partner FCS Flight Calibration Services, confirms its leading role in the emerging market of drones for NavAid inspection.

This year's Spectrum Summit of LS telcom AG will again take place digitally on June 29, 2022, following the success of the previous year.

Lichtenau, 09.06.2022 - The Spectrum Summit has been an annual summer event of LS telcom AG for 26 years now. While it normally attracts visitors from all over the world to the town of Lichtenau, home to LS telcom's headquarters and home to just under 5,000 souls, this year the Summit will once again be held digitally due to the current situation, but also after last year's great success. While a digital format cannot replace the personal contacts of a live event, the reach of the international summit in terms of participants and participating nations can even be significantly increased in an environmentally friendly and sustainable way through digitization. the Digital Spectrum Summit will in no way be inferior to its predecessors in terms of the quality of the event. Participants will again experience inspiring impulses, exciting discussions and the opportunity to exchange ideas with experts and decision-makers on current technology trends and developments relating to the resource of radio.

After the welcome and an interview, this year's program will include two live panel discussions, each followed by a "studio magazine" on the topic.
Spectrum has been shared between services for decades, but pressure on demand for spectrum means sharing is becoming an increasingly serious issue. The panel, "Spectrum Sharing - getting serious," will present some of the more innovative technical and regulatory approaches that are maximizing the efficiency of spectrum sharing. The second panel discussion, "Specialized 5G Applications," will be dedicated to the growing use of private 5G networks and will showcase examples of how enterprises are increasingly realizing the benefits of 5G and taking advantage of it in specialized applications.

The virtual event is free to attend. For more information on the Digital Spectrum Summit, please visit our website: www.spectrum-summit.com

LS telcom AG looks forward to a promising Digital Spectrum Summit and welcomes international visitors to this event digitally.

LS telcom AG's annual Spectrum Summit was held digitally for the first time this year - a complete success

Lichtenau, 01.07.2021 - It's done! The 25th Spectrum Summit came to a successful end today after two days filled with high-ranking speakers. The Spectrum Summit has been an annual summer event of LS telcom AG for 25 years now. While it normally draws visitors from around the world to the town of Lichtenau, home to LS telcom's headquarters and home to nearly 5,000 souls, this year's Summit was held digitally for the first time due to ongoing COVID-19 restrictions. Despite the fact that there was no need for personal contacts and direct exchange between visitors, LS telcom customers and international spectrum experts, the Digital Spectrum Summit was in no way inferior to its predecessors: With around 380 registered participants from 85 countries and thus several time zones, the digital format proved that, just like the face-to-face event, it can bring together participants from all over the world.

Over the course of two days, current developments in the telecommunications industry were the subject of live panel discussions with high-ranking speakers from regulatory authorities, network operators, science and industry, as well as the LS telcom group itself. The titles of the discussions were "The Challenge of the C-Band" (Day 1) and "5G Campus Networks - The German Approach" (Day 2). This was followed by the new "Studio Magazine" format, which offered further interesting and entertaining presentations, discussions and interviews with numerous high-profile guests around the day's topic. To cover the numerous time zones from which LS telcom customers and visitors come, there was a replay of the live session as a recording in the evening.

"We are pleased that the Digital Spectrum Summit attracted so many international experts and that even a year of Covid forced break and format change to digital did not diminish the popularity of the event. The record number of participants was only made possible by the digitalization of the event," said Roland Götz, COO and Member of the Board of LS telcom AG. "

"Of course, a digital format cannot create a comparable atmosphere and replace all the personal contacts of a live event, but it is important to see the benefits as well. We have been able to significantly increase the reach of the Spectrum Summit in terms of attendees and participating nations through digitization, and just as importantly in today's world, we have done so in an environmentally friendly and sustainable manner by virtually eliminating the burden of long, time-consuming and costly travel."

Nevertheless, LS telcom AG is now also looking forward to welcoming participants to the Spectrum Summit again next year, perhaps even as a "hybrid event"!

Lichtenau, 06.04.2021 - LS telcom AG is pleased about further orders totaling EUR 2.2 million from authorities in Asia and the Gulf region.

The Baden-based company is particularly proud that its SPECTRA system will now, for the first time, ensure interference-free distribution of radio frequencies at the upcoming 2022 Football World Cup, as it has already done for various Olympic Games.

LS telcom AG has been active on the global market for 30 years and specializes in the management and planning of radio frequencies. Since the end of 2020, the company has been able to report on a whole range of new orders and has significantly increased its order backlog compared to the previous year.

The Executive Board is very confident about the future of the company, especially since decisions in favor of LS telcom are also expected shortly in other procurement procedures.

Lichtenau, 15th of March 2021 – LS telcom AG has received another order for the modernization and maintenance of a spectrum management system. The project has a total value of EUR 2.3 million and will be executed for a European regulatory authority.

Coinciding with the 20th anniversary of LS telcom AG's IPO, the award of the contract continues the flow of positive news the company started late last year and further expands its order book.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, various procurement procedures and contract conclusions had been delayed for LS telcom AG last year. Since December 2020, the Baden-based specialists for radio frequency management and planning have been able to report several new orders with handsome contract values.

The Executive Board of LS telcom expects further orders from procurement procedures still in progress in the near future.

LS telcom AG continues to be successful

Lichtenau, Germany, 12.02.2021 – LS telcom AG receives an order worth EUR 1.8 million for the modernization and maintenance of a spectrum management system.

LS telcom AG is back on track for success. The Baden-based specialist for the management and planning of radio frequencies has been awarded the modernization and maintenance of a spectrum management system for a Southeast European regulatory authority. The contract has a volume of EUR 1.8 million and includes options for additional business on a substantial scale.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, various procurement procedures and contract conclusions had been delayed. After LS telcom AG was already able to secure several large project contracts for itself in December 2020, the company is further expanding its order backlog with this latest order. The Executive Board of LS telcom is confident that it will be able to record further similar successes in the near future.

This year, LS telcom's 24th USERgroup was held digitally for the first time - a step towards a promising digital future!

Lichtenau, 20th of November 2020 – It is done! The 24th USERgroup conference of LS telcom took place from the beginning to the middle of November. Usually the conference forms an essential part of a customer week held annually at the LS telcom AG headquarters in Lichtenau.  Adapted to the prevailing COVID-19 situation, the USERgroup was realized digitally for the first time this year. Anyone who purchases an LS telcom product and thus simultaneously receives free membership can participate in the USERgroup: an independent group of users for users.

What had previously been viewed with healthy scepticism proved to be a successful concept at the end of the 1st Digital USERgroup: the digital format of the 24th USERgroup was particularly well received, which was reflected in the record number of participants. With almost 250 users from over 45 countries and thus several time zones ranging from Australia to South America, this year's USERgroup surpassed its predecessors in many ways. Even though this year the cultivation of personal relationships and the associated break and table discussions were missing, it was nevertheless possible to create a cross-continental bond and to exchange information digitally about product innovations, current market developments and outlooks as well as user needs.

"We are very happy that the digital format of the event was immediately accepted so positively by our customers. The very positive feedback from all participants is both a reward and an incentive for us," says Roland Götz, COO and member of the Executive Board of LS telcom AG. "Not least due to the fact that the participants were spared often long and costly journeys, the reach of the event was significantly increased. Even if classic events will be possible again after Corona, this digital format will continue to exist and will be integrated into the future concept of the USERgroup.

To build on the success of the 1st Digital USERgroup, LS telcom invites you to another digital event: The LS Digital Exhibition is a virtual realized version of the exhibition of the above mentioned Spectrum Summit and will open its digital gates from December 1st - 3rd, 2020. During four market-specific live video streams, participants will get an insight into LS telcom’s product and service portfolio and learn more about the innovative Smart Spectrum Solutions. Further information can be found on the company's website https://www.lstelcom.com

LS telcom would like to thank all participants of the 1st Digital USERgroup for their contribution to the success of the conference once again and is looking forward to an equally large number of participants for the upcoming LS Digital Exhibition.

Lichtenau/Baden, Germany, 7th October 2020 – NCA has decided to replace their existing spectrum management system in order to benefit from the vast experience of LS telcom. With this step, NCA will substantially modernize its spectrum management system and get a fully integrated and automated solution.

The contract was already signed end of July 2020 with our partner. NCA and LS telcom finalized the design review workshops that were all conducted remotely by video conferences, and also a first system version was delivered to Ghana.

This underlines the capability of the LS telcom team to ensure business continuity even during COVID-19 pandemic conditions, applying latest technology not only in our system products but also when it comes to supporting and servicing our customers worldwide.

NCA is considered an important project in LS telcom’s strategic growth on the African continent. This extends our customer base to another English speaking country and is also the first implementation of mySPECTRA in Africa.

Order income from regulatory authorities worth EUR 5.3 million

Lichtenau, Baden Württemberg, August 4, 2020 - Last week the LS telcom group of companies recorded a gratifying order intake with a total volume of approximately EUR 5.3 million. Regulatory authorities of two African countries each commissioned the company to deliver a system for national radio frequency management, the so-called Spectrum Management. With these systems the regulators will, among other things, award and manage the licences for new mobile networks. In order to ensure that the license conditions are complied with at each transmission site and that the radio transmitters do not cause interference to other users, LS telcom AG is also to supply a comprehensive national radio monitoring system in one of the countries.

The importance of the use of the radio spectrum has grown steadily in recent years. New technologies, broadband services, digitization and automation projects in industry and also in the private sector are leading to a significantly increasing number of users and devices, all of which rely on highly available, reliable, interference-free connectivity via wireless networks. National spectrum management, which means not only the optimized allocation and assignment of the limited national radio spectrum resource, but also includes the control of the actual use of these radio frequencies by continuous high quality radio monitoring, is therefore immensely important for a country's economy. Last but not least, especially in the current times of the Covid-19 pandemic, good radio coverage is essential for broadband services to support distributed working as much as possible, but also for the dissemination of information to people via regular audio and TV broadcasting services.

"We are all the more pleased about the acquisition of these two new customers and the contracts that have now been concluded, as the Corona pandemic meant that we had to conduct the entire negotiations remotely via telephone and video conferences. ", Dr. Manfred Lebherz, Spokesman of the Executive Board of LS telcom AG, says "The delivery and installation of these systems under the current pandemic conditions remains a challenge, but we will successfully overcome these potential hurdles by involving our regional subsidiaries and local partners where necessary.”

The LS telcom Group is a leader in terms of both technology and the number of installations of integrated spectrum management and radio monitoring systems worldwide.

The African market has played an important role for LS telcom for many years. LS telcom has already successfully implemented projects here with customers in 24 countries. These two new customers further extend the international reach of the LS telcom Group with customers globally in well over 100 countries.

Lichtenau / Baden-Württemberg, Germany, February 18th, 2020 - LS telcom AG, a provider of technologies and consulting services for the efficient use of the radio spectrum based in Lichtenau, Baden, Germany, was one of the first companies in Germany to be awarded a 5G frequency block by the Federal Network Agency to operate its own 5G campus network.

National 5G frequency spectrum was already auctioned in Germany in the summer of 2019 to the mobile network operators Deutsche Telekom, Telefónica and Vodafone as well as the new entrant 1&1 Drillisch. What is actually special about the generation change to 5G in Germany, however, is the fact that the Federal Network Agency has this time reserved frequencies exclusively for local, so-called campus networks in addition to the classic licences for the nationwide mobile network operators.  For the first time, this offers companies the opportunity to implement their own individual network tailored to their applications and needs and thus become independent of the classic mobile network operators.

LS telcom AG is one of the first companies in Germany to have successfully applied for and received frequencies for a campus network and will use the frequencies received in the 3.7 - 3.8 GHz range for internal communication and processes, as well as for the further development of its business areas and as a test field for customers: in future, the company's own communication network will be able to transmit much larger amounts of data (e.g. for IT, measurement or high-resolution image data) securely, wirelessly and almost in real time. In addition, customer-specific system solutions with large bandwidths and high latency requirements can be tested in real 5G environments. This includes applications for the Internet of Things (IoT) and Industry 4.0, as well as radio and measurement systems that are integrated, configured and tested before commissioning and delivery to customers.

"Driven by digitalization and Industry 4.0, reliable, highly available and secure radio networks are gaining enormously in importance. The award of campus licenses for proprietary networks is an enormous opportunity for very large industrial companies as well as medium-sized and even small businesses. The low license fees enable companies of all sizes to develop solutions that make the best use of this technology and thus benefit from the advantages of 5G," explains Roland Götz, COO and Member of the Executive Board of LS telcom AG.

"The provision of licenses for so-called campus networks by the German Federal Network Agency has a major signal effect internationally. This puts Germany in a pioneering role worldwide," Götz continues.

LS telcom accompanies companies as they take the step into digitalization and already provides support during the application process for the allocation of 5G frequencies. It also offers a unique all-round concept for the design, planning, management, monitoring and analysis of secure and reliable radio infrastructure.

Recommendation for a new definition of exclusive use – study produced by LS telcom on behalf of UK Spectrum Policy Forum

London, UK - Lichtenau/Baden, Germany, 6 February 2020 – Ofcom state that the licences they issue are not exclusive.[1] But what defines the “exclusive spectrum use”?

The report launched today, “The characteristics which justify exclusive use of spectrum” (prepared by LS telcom and published by UK Spectrum Policy Forum) works to address this question. It also highlights how spectrum authorisation and sharing operates in the context of the existing regulatory framework and in the light of Ofcom’s new shared access licensing regime.

The definition of ‘exclusive’ is addressed in the context of spectrum authorisation where a primary objective is to secure the efficient use of spectrum. It further examined whether the current UK spectrum licensing framework provides enough flexibility to provide enough spectrum to users in all geographic locations in the UK and whether changes should be made to Ofcom’s current authorisation framework.

The report presents three main findings:

  1. A definition of “exclusive spectrum use” which it recommends Ofcom and other stakeholders to use in the future, “user access to spectrum over a defined area which provides a predictable incoming and outgoing interference environment and the ability to deploy services in accordance with the user requirements as and when the user requires”.
  2. Ofcom’s introduction of the shared access licensing regime has increased the flexibility of the spectrum licensing framework and brings significant benefits towards realising universal access to spectrum. However, the report recommends that Government, Ofcom and industry continue to work collaboratively to recognise further opportunities for increasing the flexibility of the spectrum licensing framework where and when appropriate.
  3. That no immediate changes are necessary to the current spectrum authorisation framework, but recommends that programmes for innovation should be supported to allow for new multi-layered and multi-dimensional approaches for future authorisation decisions and frameworks and to serve future spectrum demand.

Tony Lavender, chair of the UK Spectrum Policy Forum Steering Board commented: “As we move toward a world where shared use of spectrum is increasingly encouraged it’s good to look again at the diverse range of use cases for spectrum to ensure that a portfolio of licencing solutions exists to meet user needs. LS telcom in their report have addressed this question for the UK and made recommendations to policy makers to ensure spectrum authorisation remains sufficiently focused and agile to meet future demand.”

Saul Friedner, co-author of the report at LS telcom adds: “There has been lots of work and progress made in the approaches to spectrum authorisation in the UK in the last few years, however this study highlights how there can still be some further refinements and adjustments such as to the definition of exclusive use and regular reviews of the approaches and continued collaboration to make sure the licensing framework in the UK remains fit for purpose.”

200 delegates from 34 countries attended Europe’s largest Annual Spectrum Summit, hosted by LS telcom in conjunction with PolicyTracker in Lichtenau / Baden.

Lichtenau / Baden, Germany, 4th July 2019 – “Spectrum for Everyone & Everything” was the theme of the 24th Annual Spectrum Summit concluding yesterday at LS telcom’s headquarters in Lichtenau, Baden-Wuerttemberg, Germany. The conference built upon the many 5G issues from last year’s event and took into consideration recent developments. The agenda featured presentations and panel discussions on new approaches for spectrum access for verticals, on the increasing amount of background noise on radio communication infrastructure and methods to mitigate the problem, as well as TV broadcasting via mobile networks.
The event attracted a variety of representatives and thought leaders from regulatory authorities, mobile and broadcast operators, industries, industry associations, spectrum consultants and research institutes.

The conference opened with a keynote by Harald Berninghaus, Deputy Head of Unit for Digital Society, Frequency Policy and Mobile Communications at the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure, Germany, on the topic “Spectrum for the wireless age - the challenges ahead”.

In the many controversial debates, different stakeholders presented a diversity of 5G requirements as well as issues that need solving to make 5G available for “everyone & everything”.
“For the success of 5G in Industrial IoT, it is mandatory to have dedicated resources for wireless data communication since reliability in all aspects of operation is essential in the context of a factory or production plant,” explained, for example, Dr.-Ing. Christian Bauer, Lead Developer 5G at TRUMPF Werkzeugmaschinen, Germany, and elected member of the board of 5G-ACIA (5G Alliance for Connected Industry and Automation).

Clean radio spectrum is essential for the operation of radio services. During the panel “Keeping spectrum clean” a number of panelists raised concerns about the increasing noise due to more wireless devices using the spectrum and non-radio devices (such as computers and fixed line technologies) using ever higher frequencies. “The Amateur radio community struggles with an ever-growing level of electro-magnetic pollution that is crowding in across the radio spectrum from the lowest frequencies up into the VHF bands. In some frequency ranges, efficient and useful radio communication is becoming compromised,” insisted Barry Lewis, Microwave Manager at the International Amateur Radio Union (IARU), and continued, “Aftermarket regulation and slowly evolving standards are struggling to be effective in keeping the spectrum clean for all users.” Mitigating techniques and methods against the increasing background noise were also addressed during discussions, such as continuous radio monitoring.

Panelists agreed that progress has been made on more varied licensing and authorization regimes, with BNetzA in Germany having licensed the 3.7 – 3.8 GHz band, and Ofcom having identified that shared access to spectrum can help with market expansion, i.e. targeting areas that are not considered economic by mobile network operators.

Roland Götz, COO and board member of LS telcom AG, concluded: "This year again, we were able to attract renowned international speakers from a great variety of organizations to the Spectrum Summit. Around 200 delegates from impressive 34 nations across the globe were our guests at the LS telcom headquarters in Lichtenau. We are delighted that “Spectrum for Everyone & Everything” attracted so many international experts. The immense progress in the development and implementation of 5G is reflected in the keen interest in our Spectrum Summit. This also shows that the agenda as well as our products and services are exactly in line with the trend. It is amazing for us to see how this event has developed over the past 24 years to today's “must-attend event” in the spectrum management calendar.”

“What makes the Spectrum Summit so interesting and useful is that it brings together international stakeholders – regulators, manufacturers, academics, and users -- who share their expert points of view and experience with topics and issues from different angles. Delegates benefit from a diverse agenda providing unique theoretical and practical insights, facts, ongoing issues, and future directions in the industry,” confirms James Watson, Manager of Spectrum Business Analysis, ISED Canada and future Chairman of the USERgroup. He adds, “The event is always an excellent opportunity to network and share successes and challenges with colleagues and peers.”

The Spectrum Summit is followed by a workshop for German industries on local 5G licensing, the latest topic in Germany after the allocation of local 5G frequencies for industry by the German Federal Network Agency BNetzA. The Spectrum Summit and the post-conference workshops together with the two-day LS telcom USERgroup forum for LS telcom system and software users, make up a full week of events, which is organized by LS telcom. The Spectrum Summit is organized by LS telcom in conjunction with renowned spectrum policy publication PolicyTracker.

London, UK - Lichtenau / Baden, Germany, 18th June 2019 – LS telcom UK today announces that it conducted a study for the Commission for Communications Regulation (ComReg) in Ireland on network deployment and spectrum options for Terrestrial Broadband Public Protection and Disaster Relief (BB-PPDR). ComReg published the final report of the study today.

The research carried out by LS telcom was an input to ComReg’s proposed multi-band spectrum award consultation. The scope of the study was to determine how existing and proposed network deployment options i.e. using dedicated networks, commercial networks or a hybrid, and proposed spectrum options, could potentially impact the availability of future spectrum, particularly the 700 MHz duplex.
LS telcom performed analysis of the various network deployment and spectrum options, which included an extensive pan-European country feasibility analysis of the different technical alternatives to inform the findings.

The spectrum requirements calculation for BB-PPDR usage in Ireland found that 2 x 6 MHz is sufficient to meet all possible PPDR scenarios (in accordance with the LEWP-ETSI Matrix) and that there is no impact to ComReg to include the full 2 x 30 MHz in 700 MHz duplex in the multi-band award.

The final report published by ComReg feeds into ComReg’s public consultation for the multi-band spectrum award process which includes a section on BB-PPDR spectrum options to inform stakeholders of the outcome of LS telcom’s analysis.

Bowie, Maryland, Lichtenau/Baden, Germany, 1st October 2018 – LS telcom Inc., a worldwide leader in spectrum management and monitoring solutions, today announced that it has delivered a comprehensive study of 5G spectrum compatibility to Intelsat and SES, leading providers of C-Band satellite services in the United States. The objective of this spectrum study was to analyze the characteristics and impact of signal interference as well as potential mitigation measures as a result of introducing 5G deployments in adjacent spectrum to existing C-Band satellite services.

As the FCC continues its comprehensive analysis of optimal spectrum for 5G, the use of a portion of 3.7GHz to 4.2GHz (commonly referred to as C-Band) has become a likely candidate. To better understand the potential impacts to existing C-Band satellite systems and users, the study analyzed the interaction between a hypothetical 5G network with the existing operational characteristics of the C-Band satellite in the 3.7GHz to 4.2GHz spectrum. The study provided by LS telcom covered multiple network components and a variety of operational scenarios to analyze and predict the potential impacts of 5G operations and the subsequent adjustments and mitigation techniques required for existing satellite and ground station equipment.

“We are excited to be part of this dynamic time in spectrum management. As the push to 5G continues, the need to understand the impacts of adjacent systems and spectrum sharing are critical to the success of the next generation of wireless technology, as well as for the incumbent systems that are now being asked to share their spectrum resources,” stated Casey Joseph, Vice President at LS telcom, Inc.

“With our comprehensive solutions and global experience in spectrum management, LS telcom is uniquely positioned to help both new entrants as well as incumbent systems in this transition.”

The delivery included a report of findings based on several modeled locations as well as a software toolset enabling ongoing analysis of additional site locations and scenarios. The baseline of the solution leveraged LS telcom’s SpectrumMap, a visualization platform able to interpolate data from multiple sensor and source inputs to provide coverage predictions.

Lichtenau / Baden, Germany, 5th July 2018 – “Future of Broadband – Beyond Consumer Broadband” was the theme of the 23rd Annual Spectrum Summit concluding yesterday at LS telcom’s headquarters in Lichtenau/Baden Württemberg, Germany. The conference featured presentations and panel discussions on 5G services, new use cases and spectrum requirements for vertical markets, as well as the future of radio broadcasting in the light of 5G. The event attracted representatives and thought leaders from regulatory authorities, mobile and broadcast operators, spectrum consultants, research institutes, industries and industry associations. Presenters and participants of the different panels set out their vision on 5G. It became clear from the day’s presentations and subsequent discussions that 5G has the potential to go far beyond serving consumer broadband. New market opportunities and completely new business models are being driven by 5G, in particular for industry verticals, such as manufacturing industries, healthcare and transport. “Ultra reliability, low latency and massive connectivity together with other technology developments will enable solutions for individual use cases. The question is to what extent operators are willing to slice up their capacity to deliver these services and whether individual users have to provide and operate their own 5G networks,” said Martin Sims, Managing Director, PolicyTracker. Panelists agreed that new approaches are necessary and that existing business models have to be completely rethought. Saul Friedner, Associate Director, Spectrum Services at LS telcom, summarized, ”While new and more varied licensing and authorization regimes have to be introduced to allow industry verticals access to spectrum, industry will at the same time have to manage the spectrum much more efficiently, as usage is becoming increasingly complex.” Radio broadcasting is facing turbulent times as broadcasters struggle to develop viable business plans in an increasingly digital and streaming led world. Richard Womersley, Director of Spectrum Services for LS telcom opines, “With streaming services such as Spotify and increasingly available mobile broadband capabilities, the way in which people consume music is changing. FM broadcasting continues to lead digital platforms, including DAB, but this will change and radio broadcasters will need to innovate and adapt to maintain their relevance.” Mark Rider, Business Solutions Architect at Ofcom UK, commented, “This is my 12th time attending the annual Spectrum Summit. The Summit has an excellent line-up of speakers and experts from around the world. The diverse agenda provides great theoretical and practical insight of current developments within the sector. The Spectrum Summit is a must-attend event for anyone who wants to stay informed about latest trends in the industry.” Roland Götz, board member of LS telcom AG, concluded, “We were able yet again this year to attract a wide range of expert speakers to the 23rd Spectrum Summit. In addition to regulatory and media authorities, telecom institutions and operators, we had experts from an even wider range of industrial companies; such as AirFrance, Bosch and the SNCF Group, as well as AGURRE, the association representing industrial radio users. This demonstrates that the Spectrum Summit is well-known and well-respected, but also that 5G is a top priority on the agenda of industry verticals that are ready to take things forward.”

London, UK, Lichtenau/Baden, Germany, 6th August 2018 – LS telcom UK was commissioned by the UK Spectrum Policy Forum (SPF) to conduct a future looking study to examine the practicality, feasibility, and implications of defragmenting the UHF band 694 to 960 MHz.

SPF is the industry sounding board to Government and Ofcom on future spectrum management and regulatory policy with a view to maximizing the benefits of spectrum for the UK.

The study was initiated by the UK SPF in response to radical proposals to re-plan the 694 to 960 MHz band to remove the current fragmentation. The proposals claimed that such re-planning could potentially deliver considerable benefits such as increased capacity, future proofed spectrum and securing access for DTT services below 694 MHz.

The LS telcom study found that the overall capacity benefits gained from the proposed defragmentation would be small compared to the gains promised by future technology developments such as 5G and the use of higher frequency bands. Further, LS telcom determined that the proposed defragmentation would impose a considerable cost burden on mobile network operators, who would need to upgrade every base station in their network, for a fractional increase in capacity.

Project manager, Saul Friedner, Associate Director of Spectrum Services at LS telcom said, "This was a challenging project due to the future looking nature and the requirement to determine what a mobile network might look like in 2030. Whichever way we looked at the problem we could see no significant justification to undertake such a defragmentation exercise.”

Lichtenau / Baden, Germany, 5th March 2018 – Following a joint-development effort with FCS Flight Calibration Services GmbH, LS telcom’s Colibrex announces the launch of NavAidDrone, a drone-based system for navigational aid (NAVAID) inspections.
The NavAidDrone is used for field measurements required for commissioning and regular maintenance of Instrument Landing Systems (ILS). It will support Air Navigation Service Providers, NAVAID system manufacturers, and CNS (communication, navigation, surveillance) installation and maintenance service engineers. The system can also perform VOR and GBAS measurements with additional software included.
Measurement data, processed by the NavAidDrone, will now be available for areas that cannot be accessed by vehicles or conventional telescopic masts and for which measurement was therefore previously not possible. For instance, the NavAidDrone measures localizer coverage with ease in a sector of ± 35° towards the antenna as it can be fully programmed to fly orbit paths. The airborne measurement system can also detect high frequency oscillations of ILS signals caused by buildings, cranes or other construction work obstacles.
Luc Haeberlé, Managing Director of Colibrex explains, “The integrated high-performing FCS receiver guarantees extremely accurate measurement results. At the same time, the flexible airborne platform delivers a much higher volume of measurement points and results, compared to ground measurements. Altogether, the measurement results obtained with the NavAidDrone are much more comprehensive and precise and improve ILS periodical measurements, adjustment and maintenance work substantially. At the same time, the use of NavAidDrone is more cost-effective and will also potentially reduce flight inspection hours.”
Rüdiger Schmidt, Managing Director of FCS, adds, “Drone-based ILS measurement opens the way to a new era in NAVAIDS inspection and FCS together with Colibrex are at the forefront of this exciting and complementary approach to flight inspection. Flight inspection and ground measurements should go hand in hand to ensure the best performance of our client's NavAids. Our exciting new technology very effectively bridges the gap between the two worlds.”
The NavAidDrone unites the flight inspection and receiving and processing expertise of FCS Flight Calibration Services GmbH and Colibrex’s expertise in the design and international commercial operation of unmanned aircraft systems for radio frequency measurements.
Colibrex and FCS are planning a follow-up development and launch of the “RadarDrone” to perform field measurements for commissioning, trouble-shooting and regular maintenance of military and civil radar and surveillance systems, including primary (PR) and secondary (SSR/MSSR) radar installations. The Air Navigation Service Providers and CNS maintenance staff, radar system manufacturers and radar service organisations will benefit from this new drone-based measurement technology.

Lichtenau / Baden, Germany, 22nd November 2017 – The European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) has officially adopted results from LS telcom’s study “Coexistence of GSM-R with other Communication Systems” commissioned by the European Union Agency for Railways. The LS telcom report examined the possibility of using the ER/R-GSM spectrum by other radio communication systems for railways in coexistence with the existing GSM-R system operated in that frequency band. The objective of the study was to find out whether new spectrum is required for a successor system or whether band sharing during migration from GSM-R to its successor would be feasible.

The results of this study are integrated in the ETSI System Reference document (SRDoc) TR 103 333 about GSM-R networks evolution. This document intends “to describe the spectrum requirements for a European system for operational railway communications between a terrestrial ground network and a train, based on 4G/5G technology, and operating in the band 873 - 880 MHz paired with 918 - 925 MHz, in coexistence with the already deployed GSM-R technology.”

Both, LS telcom’s study and ETSI’s System Reference document are part of a joint effort by the Union Internationale des Chemins de Fer (UIC), the European Union Agency for Railways, the GSM-R industry and other railway stakeholders across Europe in close cooperation with ETSI to define and specify the next generation solution “Future Railway Mobile Communications System” (FRMCS), including future spectrum requirements.

A key challenge is that spectrum is needed for both the FRMCS and GSM-R during the migration phase. An update of the EU legal framework is necessary to make available additional harmonized spectrum in order to guarantee European railway interoperability.

London, UK, Lichtenau/Baden, Germany, 23rd October 2017 – LS telcom today announces the publication by the European Commission of the “Study on Spectrum Assignment in the European Union”. The report, written by LS telcom together with PolicyTracker and VVA, examines the approaches used by EU Member States for authorizing and assigning spectrum with a view to determining which methods might be most appropriate in the context of future 5G services and the development of industrial sectors, so called vertical markets, in the European Union.
“This study will inform regulators, operators and service providers of electronic communications of the benefits from adopting alternative approaches to spectrum authorisation and assignment. These approaches could unlock access to different services using 5G technologies that may otherwise have been delayed. More flexible use of these approaches improves spectrum efficiency and ultimately improves access to connectivity for enterprises and consumers,” reports Saul Friedner, Associate Director, Spectrum Services at LS telcom.
According to the study, the spectrum access requirements of the ‘vertical’ services, which have specific technical and performance characteristics, differ widely from the requirements of mobile services, and are driving the way in which spectrum will be used, and the associated regime under which it should be authorized and assigned. The study found that assignment approaches should be harmonized across Member States, especially for higher frequency bands (e.g. 26 GHz), and appropriately sized blocks considered, when authorizing spectrum for different services.
“The findings of the study will provide additional elements in the context of the ongoing negotiations with the European Parliament and the Council on the Commission Proposal for a ‘European Electronic Communications Code’ (EECC). The study will be further exploited in the context of the implementation of the Commission 5G Action Plan,” as indicated in the EU press release.

When will exponential mobile growth stop?

London, UK, Lichtenau/Baden, Germany – LS telcom today announces the publication of a report entitled “When will exponential mobile growth stop?”

Richard Womersley, Director Spectrum Consulting of LS telcom, explained the rationale for the study, “Exponential growth cannot continue indefinitely as the result would be that whatever is growing will eventually reach an infinite size. We wanted to examine more closely how future mobile data traffic will really evolve and whether current estimates of continuing exponential growth until at least 2030 are valid, in order to inform ongoing activities to identify new spectrum bands for 5G.”

LS telcom experts first calculated how much data an individual may be able to consume to determine what a finite limit to mobile data usage might be. This resulted in the surprising conclusion that even using extreme values for potential personal data use (such as every person on the planet streaming Ultra-High Definition 4K video for 16 hours per day), the majority of growth in mobile data traffic would still be complete by the late 2020s.

Secondly, the study examined the growth in mobile data usage in a number of advanced countries where users are already ‘ahead of the curve’ with respect to their usage of mobile data. Three countries were identified where mobile data growth is already showing signs of slowing down and in each case, it is clear that the reason for this slow down is not related to spectrum availability. In these countries, there may only be a factor of three to four times mobile data traffic growth remaining, according to the report. This appears to be a trend. The study also surmises that data growth only continues to show exponential characteristics in those countries where digital divides remain or where connectivity is still being rolled out.

Systems delivered as part of USAID technology package for the Liberian Telecommunications Authority (LTA)

Bowie, Maryland / USA, Lichtenau/Baden, Germany, 26th September 2017– LS telcom, Inc., a worldwide leader in Spectrum Management and Spectrum Monitoring solutions, today announced the installation of  multiple LS OBSERVER sensor-based monitoring stations for the Liberian Telecommunications Authority (LTA). The purchase of the systems was facilitated through the non-governmental organization (NGO) NetHope as part of a USAID technology package for the country. Following the Ebola crisis in 2014-2015, improvement in communications was identified as a top priority for the country. Working together with USAID, NetHope selected LS telcom as the superior technology solution for LTA’s requirements. The acquisition of the LS OBSERVER technology provides LTA with the foundation of spectrum monitoring capability including identification of spectrum conflicts, identification of free spectrum, isolation of dead zones in coverage, and locating rogue networks.

“We are very pleased to have this new capability. As I consider radiofrequency a scarce resource for Liberia, the LS OBSERVER monitoring stations will allow our team to fully optimize spectrum policy and increase the enforcement capability at LTA,” said Henry W. Benson, Commissioner for Engineering & Technology at the LTA, “This technology is a key part of our mission to improve communications for our country.”

“LS telcom is excited to be part of the USAID technology deployment in the African region.  As the pace of spectrum management accelerates, regulators need to be equipped with the proper tools and capabilities to stay ahead,” said Casey Joseph, Vice President of Sales and Business Development, “With the LS OBSERVER stations in place, LTA is positioned to modernize their spectrum management capability throughout the country.”

As the African continent deploys next generation wireless networks, regulators must maintain pace with the requisite capabilities to monitor and regulate activity.   The LS OBSERVER monitoring system delivers state of the art sensor-based monitoring capabilities across the commercial spectrum.  Available in fixed and portable versions, the LS OBSERVER is ideal for regulators to monitor, establish and maintain a spectrum inventory or support spectrum inventory activities, and enforce spectrum usage policies and procedures.  As the value of spectrum continues to increase, LS OBSERVER can also be used to identify areas of unused spectrum that can be reallocated and licensed for future use.  The technology package is being delivered to Liberia through NetHope, the leading technology NGO in the region. The monitoring systems are part of a larger USAID recovery package for the country.

Lichtenau/Baden, Germany – LS telcom announced that organizations now have the possibility to validate real world radio coverage for an area of interest with their new solution SpectrumMap. As a cloud based big data system SpectrumMap gathers real spectrum usage data from a monitoring network and presents the data on a map in a fast, user-friendly way. The system collects and stores spectrum data from many monitoring sources, such as fixed sites, temporary sites, mobile, handheld and portable devices. The equipment can be from different providers and manufacturers. The easy to use interface allows even staff, not qualified as engineers such as policy makers, band planners, licensing teams, as well as skilled engineering teams, and enforcement to use a range of analytical tools via web apps. Measured and calculated spectrum coverage data can be visualized in many ways such as by band, channel or service type. Key applications, which are available as web apps, include:

  • Field strength of single frequencies to bands, all user selectable
  • Coverage analysis of user selectable bands
  • Band occupancy
  • Spectrum use
  • Electromagnetic radiation hazard analysis
  • Dynamic band analysis where the display steps through user selectable frequency steps

In contrast to conventional control units of monitoring systems, SpectrumMap focuses on presenting the data in a geographical area rather than needing to identify monitoring sites and individually calculate coverage of each site.

Manfred Lebherz, CEO of LS telcom explained, “With SpectrumMap regulators can now for the first time base their licensing scheme on real world measured spectrum usage not just prediction. This is especially useful in urban areas, where spectrum is very densely used. We are sure that SpectrumMap will be indispensable for regulators with the introduction of 5G services, the Internet of Things (IoT) applications and connected objects.”

IMT Spectrum

LS telcom helped inform evidence-based decision making at the WRC through its extensive studies and analyses on the licensing and usage of worldwide international mobile telecommunications (IMT) spectrum and the ITU model for the forecast of IMT spectrum demand.
WRC-15 allocated and identified IMT globally harmonized bands in the UHF and L- (1427-1518 MHz) bands, while fully protecting the other services currently operated in these bands. “WRC-15 took a key decision that will provide enhanced capacity for mobile broadband in the 694-790 MHz frequency band in ITU Region-1 (Europe, Africa, the Middle East and Central Asia) and a globally harmonized solution for the implementation of the digital dividend. Full protection has been given to television broadcasting as well as to the aeronautical radio navigation systems operating in this frequency band.”*
LS telcom has extensive experience in assuring interference-free co-existence of all services in these bands. Our experts have worked with a number of countries to calculate the potential impact that new LTE networks will have on DTT services and they can identify the optimum mitigation techniques and assist regulators in setting LTE license conditions.

5G

WRC-15 also laid the first milestone towards establishing the roadmap for the development of 5G mobile or IMT-2020.
LS telcom experts help institutional, academic, commercial and regulatory organizations answer fundamental questions around 5G: How will 5G impact spectrum demand? Will 5G be a new technology (and air-interface) or will it be a system of different technologies each playing to their own strengths? Our consult-ants have carried out numerous spectrum demand studies and can model and shed light on how growth in data demand impacts upon demand for radio spectrum. We provide spectrum demand studies, sharing studies and independent reviews of existing studies and forecasts. Also check out our training courses on 5G which provide you with the necessary skills to critically scrutinize conflicting statements and views by different parties involved

PPDR

WRC-15 identified spectrum in the 694-894 MHz frequency band to facilitate mobile broadband communications for robust and reliable mission critical emergency services in public protection and disaster relief (PPDR), such as police, fire, ambulances and disaster response teams.* The development of user scenarios, the determination of capacity and spectrum requirements, the selection of the most appropriate technology and the design and procurement of networks is where LS telcom’s expertise can support organizations with the move to new PPDR networks and technologies.

LS telcom is working for the European Railway Agency (ERA) on a study to analyze the possibility of using the ER/R-GSM spectrum by other radio communication systems for railway use in coexistence with the existing GSM-R system operated in that frequency band.

Sharing the ER/R-GSM bands with a new radio communication technology will possibly impact both the operation of the GSM-R-System and the additional radio system. Therefore a careful analysis of the effects, their impact on the existing GSM-R system and possible mitigation methods are required. The over-arching scope of the study can thus be summarized by the following question: Can the new system share the ER/R-GSM band or is new spectrum needed?

Depending on the answer to this question ERA may need to take further steps and the results of the study may be used by ERA to inform the Commission and the European Communication Committee about future spectrum needs for a successor to GSM-R.

LS telcom carries out EMF (electromagnetic field) studies and compliance surveys for Ericsson in South Africa.

The study consists of EMF simulations, which form the main input into the Site Safety Compliance Report according to the ICNIRP (International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection) standard.

LS telcom assesses all types of sites, such as indoor and outdoor, rooftop and greenfield sites. Since September 2015, LS telcom has already examined 125 sites across South Africa. The compliance report covers exclusion zones and recommendations for appropriate signage and access control to sites to ensure protection against over exposure. For sites initially not-compliant, LS telcom experts will give recommendations on measures to be taken to make the sites compliant. All sites are then re-assessed for compliancy.

ARCOTEL (Agency for the Regulation and Control of Telecommunications), the new regulatory authority of Ecuador, formed through the merger of Ecuador’s two former bodies SENATEL (Regulation) and SUPERTEL (Control), is taking over and using the LS telcom SPECTRA system that has been in operation at SENATEL since 2009. TETRA-BOS indoor coverage radio systems (Article in GERMAN)

A common request amongst regulators is to provide an evaluation of the amount of spectrum required for commercial terrestrial mobile broadband (IMT) services. In trying to assess the demand for spectrum for IMT services, we have examined the model used by many regulators around the world to produce the forecasts which will eventually be used to inform decisions at World Radiocommunication Conferences (WRC). Using this model, developed by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), we have identified a number of issues which mean that the model, as it stands, does not provide useable nor useful results.
